Issues
Education
I believe that investing in education is crucial for our nation’s future. By supporting quality public education, we can empower every student to reach their full potential and drive economic growth, innovation, and stronger communities. Cost shouldn’t get in the way of ability to learn. Let’s work together to build a stronger, more educated America for all.
Labor
I support family farms, small businesses, entrepreneur’s and any company that wants to contribute to the Kansas economy. But as for the worker, particularly workers of large corporations(50+ workers) there should be a minimum requirement when it comes to working conditions, pay, and protections.
We need a Workers Bill of Rights, just read through the information below from the Kansas Dept. of Labor, and ask yourself if this should change.
Healthcare
Step 1 Medicaid expansion.
Step 2 Single Payer.
Let Doctors be Doctors, according to different studies Doctors spend 20 – 60 % of their time doing paperwork depending on their specialty. Arguing on the phone with an insurance carrier shouldn’t be part of the job. It is well known we pay the most for healthcare with worse outcomes than other Nations. When I see sports stadiums named after them or expensive advertisements for Health Insurance carriers Its extremely frustrating, as I hardly seek care due to cost even though I sure pay premiums.
Medical decisions should be made between the Patient and their Doctor. Lawmakers have no right to interfere in the process. Kansans made a statement in 2022, when they overwhelmingly voted in favor of Women’s Rights!
Tax
As much as we hate paying taxes there is a quote on the IRS building in Washington D.C. that stuck out when I seen it. “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society.”
If we want good schools, good roads, airports, parks, etc… taxes are the tradeoff we make. Fair tax is the issue. All of the funding should not be on the backs of the working class.
The above image is a representation of the ‘Flat Tax’ package our Legislature has been trying to make law. Following Gov. Laura Kelly’s veto, they have moved away to a different 2 bracket system they are trying to get passed in a forthcoming special session, with very similar effects.
As a patriotic American, and a proud Kansan, I would proudly let the state keep my $58 if it means we have the means to improve the lives of all Kansans.
We also need to look at strengthening the Homestead Refund for our Seniors who’s limited retirement security keeps getting chipped away at by raising property taxes and other expenses.
Update:
Tax Cuts were passed. Virtually the only change to the prior bill was lowering the amount of property tax relief offered, and lowering the tax cut for the top bracket by .01%. My position remains the same. Alternatively, the distribution of the cuts could have been spread out further helping all Kansans’ as once again the lowest 60% of taxpayers may find all and/or more of there savings having to be handed over to their gas company, as the Kansas Corporation Commission is deciding on a $80 – $115 raise to your annual gas bill to give a extremely profitable gas company even more.
Agricultural
I will stand with Family Farms over Corporate Conglomerates any day of the week. Anything to help get them the tools they need, improve the margins that they receive and improve lives of our farmers and their business’. The price fixing and market consolidation that takes place on a national and global level ends with bad outcomes for both farmers and consumers. Right to repair should be enacted to provide competition to lower cost of repairing the expensive machinery farmers use, or to allow farmers to make simple repairs on the spot without the need for costly downtime.
Constitutional Rights
Life
Liberty
Pursuit of Happiness
And of course the reason you clicked on this section, The 2nd amendment. I stand for ALL of our rights, and the rights of law abiding citizens. However, for the safety of our children, and to reduce the agony and loss endured by family members of victims, there are measures that can be taken to reduce the gun violence rate in which The United States leads the world. Most of these measures are simply enhancing the laws that are already on the books.
Cannabis
Cannabis is legal in 38 states for medical use, and 24 states for recreational use. I support creating a taxed and well regulated market for cannabis to stop the criminalization of non-violent individuals, and alleviating the burden on the judicial system. Legalization would create jobs, tax revenue, ensure product safety, and keep citizens away from ‘drug dealers’ whom are more likely to have more dangerous drugs. The tax revenue may go wherever is needed including schools, tax rebates, or local and state police departments to pursue interdiction of more harmful drugs such as fentanyl.
Vote Michael Lewis
